Microsoft Issues Update If You Take Screenshots In Windows
On Friday Microsoft publicly released security updates for both the Windows 10 Snip & Sketch tool and the Windows 11 Snipping Tool programs. This resolved a ‘low’ severity vulnerability (flaw) labeled aCropalypse
I will not get into the techie-talk reasons, but rather urge you to check if your Windows operating system is currently updated if you use these tools regularly to take screenshots as I do.
First check to see if your Windows operating system is up to date.
- Type in your windows search box: “Update”
- Then click on < Check for updates >.
Mine was updated with a general Windows update on Friday.
Updating Windows OS Takes Some Time
Note: If your machine is not current, updating will take a while and you will need to reboot your system.
The updates will download, you will have to reboot and then the updates will install. You should not turn off your computer during the entire process.
You should therefore save any open files and shut down programs before you update.
As an alternate, some online article instructions point you to Microsoft’s app store. This will address the emergency update if you are time short.
Here is the step-by-step since I found some directions were not clear and other articles never offered any directions.
- Go to Microsoft’s app store: https://apps.microsoft.com/store/apps
- Click on < Open Store app > on the blue button near the top of the screen on the left.
- On the bottom left of your screen click on < library >.
- Back to a blue button at the top on the right, click on < Get updates >.
- Click on < Update all > to update all the apps recognized on your machine.
When the updating is complete, you will get the notice “Your apps and games are up to date” on the top left under the word ‘Library’.
Looking for more apps and games? Visit the app store for a list of free, paid for and on sale apps.
